Toe Walking

Toe walking can be common in toddlers who are learning to walk.

If toe walking persists beyond early childhood, occurs frequently, or is associated with developmental delay, muscle tightness, balance difficulties or asymmetry, physiotherapy assessment may be recommended.

Assessment may include evaluation of:

  • Muscle length and joint range of movement

  • Strength and balance

  • Gait pattern and motor coordination

  • Neurological and developmental screening

Treatment at Lumi Kids is individualised and may include:

  • Stretching programs for calf muscle tightness

  • Strengthening and dynamic balance activities

  • Retraining heel-toe gait patterns

  • Home exercise programs integrated into play and everyday routines

  • Advice regarding footwear, orthotics or night splints where appropriate

Current research supports a range of management approaches for idiopathic toe walking depending on the child’s age, presentation and degree of muscle tightness.
